Scratch Building Supplies (Updated 11/17/08)

Postby Jeff_C on Sun Jan 27, 2008 9:27 pm

This will be a list of the small odds n ends found in hardware, craft/hobby stores that are useful in scratchbuilding or adding details to other kits.

:!: There is one ground rule for the list for the sake of continuity is that everyone PM's me with whatever items they have found already that way the list is kept to one post and would be easy for anyone to copy and paste it for easier printing as opposed to having items being spread out over 3 or more pages. This will also eliminate redundant entries on the list.

What I'm looking for is:

 What is it (braided wire, jewels, etc)

 Item number

 Manufacturer

 Where can it be found (Hobby Lobby, Michael's, Home Depot, etc)

 And what can it be used for (winch cable, emergency lights, tow hooks, etc)

Hopefully when it's all said and done, this list will encompass common easy to find items such as toothpicks to more specialty items as MV Lenses, and from jewels to chains and springs to braided wire. I will also include items such as special shape Evergreen or Plastruct styrene (1/4, 1/2 round, corregated sheet, elbow fittings, etc).

The plan is to put this on an Excel spreadsheet or similar format and convert it to a PDF to be posted on the parts page for easier printing.

:!: Once again I ask that items to be added to the list be PM'd to me instead of posted here

All Future updates will be highlited after posting

NOTES:

1.) MV Lenses are hard to come by, most LHS's don't usually carry them. IF they do it would be in their model train section.

These 3 links has them in more sizes and colors than I listed above:

http://store.nexternal.com/shared/StoreFront/default.asp?CS=sbm&StoreType=BtoC&Count1=385585963&Count2=302726387&Keyword=MV+Products&Target=products.asp

http://www.enginetender.com/516m.htm

http://www.discountmodels.com/m.v._lenses.htm

2.) I've only been able to order these fittings online, and Plastruct has a $20 minimum order through them.

http://www.plastruct.com/Pages/OnlineCatalog.lasso

3.) The elbow fitting EL-3 at 2.4mm is actually .14mm smaller than what 2.5" scales out to be in 1/25 scale. And 14 hundreds of a millimeter is too small to notice but it's enough that I should let you know.

4.) This 3.2mm wide elbow scales out to just under 3.2" in 1/25. Four of them makes a pretty good deck gun, they have different sizes so you can make a smaller bumper mount, or a massive industrial gun

5.) This treadplate can be found at the following link. TCA 1004, is listed as a treadplate but I do not know what pattern it is.

http://www.discountmodels.com/techstarpe.htm

6.) KFS can be found here:

http://www.kitformservices.com/photoetch.html

http://www.danmodeltruckworld.com/shop/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=104

http://www.stsmodeltrucks.com/store/agora.cgi?product=aftermarket&cart_id= (slamlocks only)

7.) These multi color jewel packs are a hit-miss proposition in that the 10mm square ones are 32 per package and one package has 22 that can not be used unless you want pink or purple lights on your rig. The smaller octagon multi color pack was a little better in that out of 72 only 15 were un useable.

8.) These clear jewel or gemstone packs are probably the most preferable in that you can use the Tamyia clear paints to tint them as needed.

9.) These are kinda of an odd shape but with a little careful sanding they can be used for the rear rotator lights on rigs. They can even be cut or sanded in half to make these low profile lights like these:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v405/Jeff31/Fire%20Engines/Details/Exterior/19173-3.jpg

They can be tinted with Tamyia clear paints to suit your need.

10.) The original item #17 (Plastruct; 570-95506; 150# Valve 1/4") in the MISC details and items list has been removed based on recipt of item from Walthers. It does not pass quality standards. The felt comes in different colors to include gray.

11.) The Raboesch Super Styrene is imported by Midwest Products but is not listed on Midwest's website.
http://www.raboesch.com/english/cat1_profiles3.htm

12.) There are other stripes and letter sets of all colors on Microscale's site. http://www.microscale.com/catalog_search.mv

13.) These are silver flat head pins that with a small strip of styrene can be made into pump control handles.

14.) These are silver ball head pins that can be made into discharge handles to replace those that are molded on the Trumpeter ALF.

15.) This leafing kit is an alternative to using BMF on small items or doing touch ups on chrome plated parts.

16.) These cords are good for making the color coded crosslays and other hoses. Besides the blue, yellow, and orange listed they also come in purple, black, white, green, and dark brown.

17.) Lino-O-Tape's website: http://www.lineotape.com/shop/shopdispl ... =LineOTape
