HURST/Gremlin rescue car

Postby AMT4EVR on Sun Jan 05, 2014 2:38 pm

GREETINGS,
I was looking at some old 70's fire mags, and there was an ad for a rescue car from HURST called the HRS-1 and was built on the AMC GREMLIN. It carried the hurst tool and lots of other small rescue equipment. Was this a special unit that was really used in fire dept's ??? , by any chance does any one have a color photo of this ?? . Sounds like a good match with the AMT gremlin and lot's of aftermarket parts. THANKS ..John

Hurst produced this car as a way to garner publicity for his new "Jaws of Life" and demonstrate the tools at race tracks. Murray County Rescue saw the demonstrator and bought it, and they used it as their front line rescue until 2002.

As far as I know, the only one left (out of 8 built) is the one owned by Murray County Rescue in Chatsworth, GA. It is now a reserve unit and is mainly used for PR and parades.

Murray County Rescue's facebook page has more photos in the FDIC 2012 album.

Hurst also had a modified Ford van that was strictly a rescue truck based around the Hurst tool

They also did a couple Pacers. A book called Hurst Equipped tells about them it has pictures of the Gremlin but none of the Pacers or Ford van

Here's a Hurst MERV operated by the Coram NY FD. Unfortunately I can't shrink the size of the picture.

The elevated beacon was also a scene light that was made by SuperVac back in the 70s. The colored dome had a rotating beacon in it while white scene lights shined downward from the base.
