RickW's Emergency! Builds

Postby RickW on Mon Jun 19, 2017 8:09 pm

AAANNDD so it begins! Instead of doing a thread for each model, I thought I would just create one for every thing because I will probably work on parts for each here and there. If the mods or you guys prefer a thread for each one let me know and I'll do that. My plans are to build Squad 51, both Engines, a ladder truck, snorkel, a Crown Cab, a Battalion Chief's car, and the suburban and big box ambulances. I spent the last couple of weeks researching kits, pics, and parts and here is what I have in so far.

I also ordered a cheap AMT Pumper to gut for the Crown, then I found out Round 2 is releasing the kit next month. I'll pick-up one of those to do a Ward LaFrance with. The Threeinchesunder stuff is nice, super fast shipping. I debated to scratch build the rear part of the squad because 1: I'm not as talented at that as you guys, 2: I saw a video of a guy who built the squad using this resin kit and he said that it was a solid piece so that worried me a bit. To save time I went ahead and ordered the kit and was pleasantly surprised that they now have hollowed out the body and the chassis is a separate piece making it a lot lighter. I hope to start in a day or two and will post pics on my progress.

I applaud your idea, and Hope you can accomplish your plan
I know the Suburban will Not be easy as that era was never offered in Kit
And the last run or ANY Kit Close are both 72's
The Model-King run of the AMT Blazer, and the Longbox Checvy Cheyenne Fleetside
Sadly the Fleetside is VERY hard to get even though re-issued 4 times since 95
The Suburban seen many times was a 70, so.......Good luck on that Grill
You do have options on the Modular Box Ambulance, Ford Or Chevy
And this time the 72 would be acceptible as the grill is almost Identical between 71 & 72
( I personally am not sure which year it was.
Showing the lights IN the grill will be difficult without a Photo-etch grill
Painted effect MIGHT work, but.......
The Unity Rotator dome will be Fun!! trying to have the 2 clear bands in the red domes...
Start with Clear domes IF you can!!
I am Not sure what year the Ford was. ONLY the Chevy cab Ambulance had BLUE lights
on the front of the box.

Have you found an Era Correct Plymouth, OR Matador sedan??
MPC's 77/78 is Not old enough to be correct for EMERCENCY!!
I know of a 2dr 72/73 Nascar Matador, but converting that to a 4dr sedan......
I Wish it Was possible as that could be a Perfect ADAM-12 Companion!!!!

How many Crown Coach Engines do you have planed??
the First Engine 51 IS a Crown.
There were a few others shown, both Open like 51 and closed
Also remember 2 different Crowns were used as 51 in different episodes/seasons
depending on availability. They Were Working units with the County Fire Department after all!!
Only the Ward was primarily a Studio owned piece during the filming of the series
It did take a position as second engine out of then Station 60 (Universal Studios)
after the series run

Can you tell I Like Emergency??

Thanks Dan!
I hadn't researched the Suburban yet but I may have to scratch that idea. I did glimpse at the suburban model but that was pretty much all I did since it didn't look quite right. From what I have seen the Box Ambulance may be the only option.

I haven't had any luck on the Plymouth or Matador either unless I find a scale die-cast to convert. I may just do a Chief's car along the lines of Steve McQueen's from The Towering Inferno, if I can find the right kit.

For the Crown's, I am planning on one open cab which I am going to make as Engine 8 since I have the WLF kit coming and I may go ahead and pick up another Crown kit from Threeinchesunder and make a cab for it.

I am also using the ALF Ladder Chief for Truck 8 like they had on the show and the Aero Chief for Truck 127, just going to have to make a cab for that. Maybe if enough request it, Dave will make one soon.

Emergency! is still my favorite show and I have watched it a lot lately pausing and looking at the different trucks for ideas. Any information you have, ideas, or tips I would appreciate or if you just want to talk about the show or models let me know.

How about one of the Model-King/Moebius 69 Ford F-100's to use for Foan 127??
Or find a 60 Ford F-100 to use for Deluge 105??
I want to try those 2 myself
BUT, the 60 Ford has Not been available even in Resin for some time,
and I still don't have ANY of the Moebius F-100's!!!!
Too expensive for me!!!

Is there a 67-72 Chevy Suburban resin or Diecast out there??
I have not seen or heard of one yet

I have the Grill for the Yellow Ambulance, but....
I Might Bash one though
I have a few extra Blazer and Pickup lots I can use.

Any plans for the Modular Ambulances??
Brand too if possible.
I can do the Chevy with parts
BUT the Ford.......
Again, I don't have anything to use
The Closest I have is the 79 F-100 in Bigfoot 1 and re-issued Firestones Superstones versions
Too New for authenticity.
As for a Chief Car............
I only know of the Nascar Matador, NO Stock sedan
Styrene, Diecast, Resin Or TOY plastic

The closest are the Long lost Jo-Han 68 Fury, and AMT's 70 Ford
The Ford is easy to get being re-issued a few times recently

NOT Correct for Emergency, But MIGHT be for LA County

If you can get the Headlights, etc to backdate one, the MPC 77/78 Monaco Police can work too
But, that one tends to command a Price now, whether Roscoe's Cruiser from Duke's (Last run)
TJ Hooker, or Gotham Police/Joker Goon (TWO different issues of that one)

Personnally, I would do Both Engine 51/s Crown, & Ward.
Also Johnny was on Squad 10 in the Pilot!!
He filled in on Engine 8 once due to taking a day off

I was watching a couple of episodes last week that had deluge 105 and Foam 127 and thought they would be cool but haven't researched them, you have given me a starting point.

I have not seen any 67-72 Suburbans. I may have to look into a later model ambulance that might have been used in L.A. city or county for an ambulance and try to kit bash something.

For the Suburban you will need a Pickup and the roof off a Blazer
Fill the gap between the cab & pickup box as the Suburban
was a single body unlike the pickup
Length & Wheelbase are correct using the 72 Fleetside kit
IF you have one!!!!

Revell just released the 66 Suburban which can Also be used for an Emergency piece
Remember the Ambulance Johnny & Roy were in with the heart Attack patient
that is hit by the lady in the Lincoln?? Finished transport on the Ward!!!!
Also used in other episodes, so............

Here is the completed Truck 8. I dropped the cab and had to redo some of it so it looks a little rough. I'm not happy with it so I will do another cab later. I also was hit with the photobucket image mess and switched to imgur.

Emergency was a great viewing must here down under in Australia. The concept of presenting numerous builds in the one forum is good when multi-tasking numerous builds at the same time. I guess that 'Drop Box' could work as an alternative to Photobucket, which I also got caught up with, but had already started using 'Fotki' which I found to be easier to use than Photobucket. At present I have been going back to some of my later 'build' posts and replacing the Photobucket links with my Fotki links. I pay a minimal amount for the use of Fotki, which is free of adds.
It took some time to build up duplicate posts of all my various builds, for Fotki, from my 'Hobby Models' files on the computer HD.

Cheers from Robbo.

Just updated the pics for Truck 8. I switched to imgur and find it easy to work with plus I can post pics directly instead of a link. Work has begun on the squad so I'll update with progress pics soon.

Ladder is nice, just some suggestions: The front ladder support needs to be lower, Don't know why the third fly is so far extended pass the other sections, the outrigger pads need to be made solid, even a piece of index card glued to it and painted would work. dry brush rust red color in a vertical stroke makes it look used. awaiting the rest of the cast.

I've even thought of doing some of the cars that were in the lot behind the station if I ever build a scale station. anyone got the plans?

Stars at night. You see them due to the light traveling from them. What you see is the stars past. If you are seeing a star that's 6,000 yrs ago. Imagine somebody on that star looking at us. They'd be seeing us as 6,000 yrs ago. Which of those two is now?

Greg,
Thanks for the tips! I did not like how high the ladder sat either so I did lower it. I'll do the pads as soon as I get some rust paint.

UPDATE:

It has been a busy semester so far, so work on the squad has been a little slower than I like. That being said here is where it stands so far.

I also have completed the air tank box but forgot to put it in for the pic. Hope to pick up the tubes for the railings and a Dodge L-700 model kit for the mirrors this weekend. Thanks Greg and Charlie for all the tips! I really appreciate them.
