2016 Group Build: Chief Cars

Postby explorer2770 on Fri Jan 01, 2016 11:47 pm

After the fun we all had this past year with the 2015 Brush Truck/Wildland group build, how about another one this year?

As Greg suggested, let's do some Chief cars/wagons this year.
Any era, any agency, any country, any medium (diecast, plastic, or resin).
Sedans, SUVs, Pickups, horse and buggy, and any other type of vehicle that can haul a chief are permissible.
You can go wild on the details or keep it simple, just make sure your chief can get to the scene to do the job.

Starts now and ends December 31, 2016 at 11:59 PM EST.

Try to post a beginning photo, a couple of in-progress photos, and of course, plenty of finished photos and extra details that you add.

I'll try to keep a list of participants and their build plans here.

Participants
Brandon (Explorer2770) -- Ford Raptor and Infinity FX45
Greg (GLMFAA1) - TBA
Charlie -- Fords
JimB -- '57 Ford Custom
Gary -- TBA
Aaron - TBA
rescue 74 -- TBA
Jonah -- '96 Tahoe
Engine18Lt -- TBA
Dave -- TBA
Greg H -- 97 Ford Expedition
71roadrunner426 -- AMT Fire Chief

Judge(s) - Greg (GLMFAA1) and foothill6514

Something easy and accessible for all, Chief cars/wagons
Die cast or plastic lots of selection from all different manufacturers,
All kinds of lights, details, years and crazy paint schemes, open to all the world

Happy New Year

Hey Greg: Since you suggested a theme how about you becoming the "Judge" for this year? You can still build if you want! ;)

Greg,

There can never be enough "white hats" at a fire scene. Who needs an engine or truck, don't fires extinguish themselves once the Chief arrives anyways?

I think you still have room for a Chyrsler 300C for the fire commissioner (he has to ride in style, right?), one of those "fancy" Ford Raptors with a truck cap for the SOC chief, or a new Ford Interceptor SUV for the everyday battalion chief. There's always some new vehicle or chief type to consider.

I've been sitting on a Maisto '05 Infinity FX45 for a while, couldn't pass up a $5.99 diecast at Hobby Lobby when it's already painted "fire engine" red. While it isn't as large as a Tahoe or even an Explorer, it does fit the crossover SUV size that some departments have looked at utilizing since gas prices have been yo-yoing the past few years. Now to figure out some stuff for the inside, a few hours on Odyssey Specialty Vehicle's website should help with that. Maybe add a low profile light bar and an arrow stick in the back...oh the possibilities.

I'm willing to give it another go despite my rather appalling record with GBs (what can I say I have the attention span of .... squirrel).

Assume Chief's ride includes pickups, SUVs, vans, horse and buggy etc?

No specific ideas at the moment, but I'm sure something will come to me.

I look at this as a modification of the "Whose Line is it Anyways?" quote: The contest where awards are made up and the winners don't matter, just have fun building and showing off your models.

I'll participate this year, maybe this will help me get back into modeling and finish some of my other builds. Is this one or multiple entries per person?

I'm in; I've got AMT's 1996 Tahoe that I'll build to get as close as I can to this chief's vehicle:

I'm new here, but I would like to participate. I just scored a kit I remember from my childhood, the AMT Impala Fire Chief. I was only 3 when this kit was released.

Still bouncing some ideas around.

Is a forest fire warden close enough to a chief?

In states that use them, they typically combine the roles of investigation / enforcement, fire patrol, prevention, training, administration and organization / leadership at wildland fires.

Aaron, I'll allow it. We have this open to any type of chief/commander in the fire or EMS service.

I'm tossing around the idea of a USFS Ford Raptor, but I don't like the overall white scheme with green markings that the new USFS BC or DV types. I'm partial to the old "sea foam" green, so I might need to pick up another '97 Expedition.

Cool, they are chief like, but with all the other duties wasn't sure if they would fit.

I have a green 2009 Ford F250 as a utility (not sure the year on the Raptor kit). We still get the occasional green truck slipping through so it wouldn't be complete fiction. Nobody not even the fleet people seem to know how that works, we can't specify green on the smaller vehicles when we order a replacement, but a few are still getting purchased (the larger vehicles like engines are green unless specified otherwise). My utility is up for replacement and I'm kind of hoping they drag their feet, because I'm afraid they will give me a white truck.

I've got a Raptor I was contemplating using to build another BLM rig. The USFS is on the conservative side with the fleet, but the BLM is not. They frequently bling out their vehicles with lift kits, large tires, winches and all kinds of useful doo dads. They are also a lot more likely to order specialty vehicles, Raptors, Humvees, Unimogs, and Tatras are not rare in their fleet.
